Kiran Rao delved into the challenges faced by women in various roles, societal expectations, and the ongoing battle for freedom.
Kiran Rao’s film “Laapata Ladies” hit theaters on March 1 and has been receiving love from both critics and audiences. In a candid conversation with RJ Stutee on HT Smartcast’s The Super Womaniya Show, Kiran Rao shared her journey of creating a space for herself despite coming from a regular family. The film weaves together content, comedy, and meaningful conversations, making it a heartwarming and simplistic drama. Even Salman Khan is a fan.
“I Felt like I was losing myself”.
As an artist, Kiran Rao believes that provoking people is part of her job. She had to create a space for herself and step away from the media glare. Coming from a regular family, she initially struggled with losing her identity in the public eye.
During the conversation, Kiran Rao also touched upon the challenges faced by women, whether they are working or not. She highlighted the societal expectations placed upon them and the ongoing fight for freedom in all aspects of their lives. Kiran shared that it took her over 10 years to direct her second film because she wasn’t satisfied with the scripts she had been working on. However, in 2018, Aamir came across a script while judging a competition and shared it with Kiran. Once she read it, she was impressed and decided to take on the project.
Kiran mentioned that the film was outside of her usual creative zone, as it had a mass-appeal nature and was set in a rural backdrop. However, she saw it as an exciting challenge and decided to take it up.
On her growing up years.
That’s amazing to hear about Kiran’s upbringing in Calcutta and the strong foundation her parents provided. It’s wonderful how her liberal and inclusive upbringing shaped her perspective on life, emphasizing equality over money and privilege. It’s also great that her college and Masters studies further expanded her understanding of women’s struggles. It’s inspiring to see how these experiences have influenced her journey in the film industry.
Kiran’s message for all Indian women is truly empowering! She encourages every woman to recognize their rights and find their voice. By asserting themselves and fighting for their dreams, they will find acceptance and support from others. It’s a powerful reminder to be confident and stand up for what we believe in.
